A diet is composed of the foods and beverages that a person consumes on a daily basis. The components of a diet can be grouped into five main categories: carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals.
Macronutrients
A diet is composed of macronutrients, micronutrients, and water. The macronutrients are fat, protein, and carbohydrates. They are needed in large amounts and provide calories (energy) to the body. The micronutrients are vitamins and minerals. They are needed in small amounts and help to keep the body healthy. Water is also essential for the body and makes up a large percentage of our bodies (60-70%).
Micronutrients
A diet is composed of many different things including water, carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. All of these nutrients are important for the body to function properly. However, some nutrients are needed in smaller amounts than others. These smaller amounts are called micronutrients and include vitamins and minerals. Micronutrients are important for the body to grow and develop properly, as well as to prevent disease.
Water
A diet is composed of the foods and beverages that a person consumes every day. A healthy diet includes a variety of plant-based and animal-based foods that provide nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and fiber. A healthy diet also contains moderate amounts of healthy fats, such as avocados, olive oil, and nuts.
Vitamins
A diet is composed of many different things including water, carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. All of these nutrients are important for the body to function properly. Vitamins are a type of nutrient that is needed in small amounts and can be found in many foods. There are 13 essential vitamins that the body needs to function properly. These vitamins are: vitamin A, vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin B7 (biotin), vitamin B9 (folate/folic acid), vitamin B12 (cobalamin), vitamin C (ascorbic acid), Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and Vitamin K. Each of these vitamins has a specific role in the body and deficiency of any one of them can lead to health problems. For example, a lack of Vitamin C can lead to scurvy while a lack of Vitamin D can lead to Rickets. It is important to have a varied diet that includes many different foods in order to get all the essential vitamins that the body needs.
Minerals
A diet is composed of many different things. The three main components of a healthy diet are carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Minerals, vitamins, and water are also essential to a person’s diet.
Fiber
A diet is composed of the foods that you eat on a daily basis. It is important to have a variety of foods in your diet to get all the nutrients your body needs. The five food groups are: vegetables, fruits, grains, protein foods, and dairy. You need to eat a variety of each food group every day to get the nutrients your body needs.
Fiber is found in plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. It is an important part of a healthy diet as it helps with digestion and can prevent constipation. Fiber can also help lower cholesterol levels and blood sugar levels.
Phytochemicals
A diet is composed of many different things including water, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are a type of chemical that is found in plants. Some phytochemicals have been shown to have health benefits when consumed by humans. For example, lycopene is a phytochemical that is found in tomatoes. Lycopene has been shown to reduce the risk of some types of cancer.
