Making your kombucha is easy and can be done with a few simple ingredients. You will need a kombucha kit, which can be purchased online or at a health food store. The kit will include a kombucha SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast), tea, sugar, and a fermentation jar.
To make the kombucha, simply brew a pot of tea using the provided tea bags and sugar. Once the tea has cooled, pour it into the fermentation jar and add the SCOBY. Cover the jar with a cloth and allow it to ferment for 7-10 days. After that you are ready for bottling at this stage you can even add flavor to it (fruits, berries, and even vegetables). Let it sit in a warm place for about 4 days to make kombucha carbonated if you want, but be careful and don’t add too many sweet fruits or berries because bottles can explode (since SCOBY is eating sugar and making CO2)! After that, put it in a fridge to chill and your kombucha is ready to drink!
Flavoring your homemade kombucha
One of the best things about making your kombucha is that you can customize the flavor however you like. Some people like to add fruit juice or fresh fruit to their kombucha, while others prefer to add herbs and spices. Here are a few recipes to get you started:
Berry Kombucha: In a saucepan, bring 1 cup of water to a boil and add 1 cup of frozen berries. Simmer for 5 minutes, then remove from heat and allow to cool. Add this mixture to your kombucha when bottling.
Ginger Kombucha: Peel and slice 2 inches of fresh ginger and add it to your kombucha when bottling.
Lemon Kombucha: Add the juice of 1 lemon to your kombucha when bottling.
These are just a few ideas – feel free to experiment and come up with your flavor combinations!
